The Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art was held for the first time in 2007 organized by the State Museum of Contemporary Art. An international magnitude initiative of the then Culture Ministry and now Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious matters, aims to bring Thessaloniki into the worldwide network of contemporary art biennales.
In 2015 during the period between the 23rd of June and the 30th of September the 5th Biennale of Contemporary Art was held. During its course, Thessaloniki hosted, in a variety of spaces (museums, exhibition spaces, galleries and monuments), 14 exhibitions of contemporary art with the creations of more than 100 international artists, three symposiums, one performance festival, artistic labs, screenings, guided tours and educational programs.
