"Kolinte" Custom - KILKIS

Every year on 23rd December in many villages of the regional area of KILKIS takes place the custom of " Kolinte ." That evening the villagers lit a great fire, representing the fire that lit the shepherds on the eve of the birth of Christ. The villagers are standing around the enormous fire. Abundant local food and drink, like bean soup, olives, homemade pickles, chili, pork chops, red wine and tsipouro is distributed free to the people. In the celebration always participate the local folk musicians, well known as “halkina Goumenissas”. This genuine folk festival continues for many hours with traditional dancing until the wee hours, little while before the kids sing the carols.
